Malaysia: 24% corporate tax
and a manufacturing window

Penang's semiconductor corridor and Kuala Lumpur's trade node, in parallel. For manufacturers, this is the most practical ground in Southeast Asia.

Corporate tax
24%

Pioneer Status can reduce the effective rate to 0–10%, typically for five years.

Incorporation
2–4 weeks

SSM registration, including name approval and statutory documents.

Manufacturing licence
MIDA

The licence is the precondition for most tax incentives.

Why Malaysia

For heavy assets,
this beats Singapore

If you are expanding for capacity rather than residency — building a plant, hiring workers, supplying customers regionally — Malaysia's cost base and industrial ecosystem are far more realistic.

  • Cost works. Labour, land and power are materially cheaper than Singapore — suited to labour- and energy-intensive stages
  • The chain exists. Penang clusters semiconductor packaging, test and electronics manufacturing with dense supplier coverage
  • The policy window is open. MIDA incentives and Pioneer Status are actively courting foreign manufacturing projects

FAQ

The six questions we are asked most

Is a local shareholder required?
Most sectors permit 100% foreign ownership. Distribution trade, logistics and some services carry foreign equity caps or licensing requirements, so the specific industry must be checked rather than assumed.
Is the MIDA manufacturing licence mandatory?
Manufacturing projects meeting investment or headcount thresholds require a manufacturing licence. The licence is also the precondition for Pioneer Status and most tax incentives.
How much does Pioneer Status actually save?
Approved projects typically receive 70–100% exemption on statutory income for five years, translating to an effective rate of roughly 0–10%. The exact percentage is decided in the project assessment; applying is not the same as being approved.
How long does incorporation take, and must I be there?
SSM registration usually takes 2–4 weeks and can be done remotely. Bank account opening generally requires the director in person, though some banks accept video verification.
How do Chinese employees obtain work passes?
Through an Employment Pass, which carries a minimum salary threshold and foreign quota requirements. Manufacturing projects usually tie this to the MIDA approval, so it should be planned in the project design stage.
How long does building a factory take?
Six to twelve months from site selection to production, depending on land status, environmental approval, utility connection and equipment lead time. We provide a month-by-month Gantt with critical dependencies.
